Conditional Admission
Conditional Admission allows academically qualified students to be accepted to the university after they study at the American
Language Program and meet the university's English language requirement.
What is Conditional Admission?
International students have the opportunity to apply for a conditional admission to California State University, Fullerton (CSUF)through the American Language Program (ALP). To qualify for conditional admission a student must have a strong academic background and good grades in high school (secondary school) or university. Students do not need a TOEFL score to apply. Before taking university courses, students will have to pass the American Language Program requirements and the university’s English proficiency requirements as listed below.
English Proficiency Requirements
In order to attend university classes, undergraduate students must have completed coursework equivalent to a U. S. high school curriculum and one of the following:
- A minimum score of 500 on the paper based TOEFL (pbt) OR
- A minimum score of 61 on the Internet-based (iBT) TOEFL OR
- A minimum IELTS score of 5.5 (Computer-based (cbt) TOEFL scores are not accepted)
In order to attend university classes, graduate students must have one of the following:
- A minimum score of 550 on the paper based TOEFL (pbt) OR
- A minimum score of 80 on the Internet-based (iBT) TOEFL (Computer-based TOEFL scores are not accepted) OR
- A minimum IELTS score of 6.5 for most Masters programs and 7.0 for the Masters in Business Administration (MBA), Music, and TESOL programs

University Classes
Undergraduate Study/Bachelor's Degree (BA, BS) - Conditional admission is available for all undergraduate degrees except Nursing. View the entire list of undergraduate degrees.
Graduate Study (Masters) - Conditional admission is acceptable for master's degrees in the following areas: Art, Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Economics, Educational Administration and Leadership, Engineering (General, Electrical, Mechanical), Environmental Science, Gerontology, Linguistics, Mathematics, Music, Political Science, Public Health, Sociology, and TESOL. How to Apply
Conditional Admission allows academically qualified students to be accepted to the university after they study at the American Language Program and meet the university's English language requirement. To apply, please do the following:
- Print and complete both the ALP application (which includes sponsor information) and the appropriate CSUF application: undergraduate or graduate.
- Be sure to sign the applications. Make a copy of the applications for yourself and send the originals.
- Pay the US $125.00 ALP non-refundable application fee by check or money order made payable to Cal State Fullerton.
- Pay the US $55 CSUF non-refundable application fee by check or money order made payable to Cal State Fullerton. Please send two separate checks.
- Send original transcripts (grades) from the high school or university you attended as well as the diploma with a certified translation.
- Send an original bank letter on bank stationery or a letter from your sponsor or scholarship organization written on their stationery showing a minimum balance of $30,000.
- Send a photocopy of the inside page of your passport with your photo and personal information.
- Students applying for a Master's degree must also send:
- 3 letters of recommendation by professors or employers.
- An essay stating the purpose of their study. Some departments may require a portfolio, audition, or other information.
